Los Angeles is a city that always feels larger than life. From the glitz and glamour of Hollywood to the laid-back beaches of Malibu, every visit here feels like stepping into a movie. I love that LA isn’t just one thing—it’s a mix of cultures, landscapes, and energy that changes with every neighborhood. But what makes it even better? The incredible places just beyond the city. Whether it’s the artistic charm of Pasadena, the iconic Pacific Coast Highway drive to Malibu, or the buzzing beach scene in Santa Monica, this is a place that keeps surprising me.
Essential LA Experiences
There’s no way around it—if it’s your first time in LA, Hollywood is a must. Walking the Hollywood Walk of Fame might be touristy, but there’s something cool about spotting your favorite actor’s star. The TCL Chinese Theatre is worth a quick stop, and if you want a great view of the city, I recommend hiking up to the Hollywood Sign (just don’t try to touch it—security is tight).
Downtown LA (DTLA) has grown into one of my favorite spots. The Broad Museum has an incredible collection of contemporary art, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall is stunning. If you love cars especially those which appeared in the movies, then the Petersen Automotive Museum is an absolute must! If you want a taste of the city’s history, grab some tacos at Grand Central Market, then explore Olvera Street, where LA’s Mexican heritage comes alive.
Beach Vibes: Santa Monica and Malibu
If I have a free afternoon in LA, I’ll head to Santa Monica. The iconic Santa Monica Pier is always buzzing with energy, and the beach is perfect for a long walk or bike ride. Just a short ride down the coast, Venice Beach is wilder—expect street performers, skaters, and some of the best people-watching anywhere.
For a more relaxed escape, Malibu is the dream. The drive along the Pacific Coast Highway is stunning, and once you’re there, the beaches are some of the best in California. El Matador Beach is a hidden gem, perfect for sunset views, and if you’re into history, the Getty Villa is one of the most beautiful museums I’ve ever visited. Even the train ride from the car part to the museum has some great views over LA.
A Different Side of LA: Pasadena and Griffith Park
Just northeast of the city, Pasadena is one of LA’s best-kept secrets. It’s got a completely different feel—tree-lined streets, historic mansions, and a thriving arts scene. The Norton Simon Museum has an incredible collection, and if you love gardens, you can’t miss the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens.
For something truly special, head up to Griffith Observatory. It’s one of my favorite spots in LA—the views of the skyline are unbeatable, and at night, you can look through the telescopes and see the stars. It’s a reminder that LA isn’t just about the glitz—it’s got some magic, too.
If the name Griffith sounds Welsh, you would be absolutely right! Griffith J. Griffith, a Welsh-born American industrialist and philanthropist, purchased Rancho Los Feliz in 1882 and later donated 3,015 acres to the City of Los Angeles in 1896.
A Few Things to Know
LA is massive, and getting around can be a challenge. Public transport exists, but I’d be lying if I said it was the best way to explore. If you want to see different parts of the city, renting a car or using ride-shares is your best bet.
Like any big city, there are areas to be cautious of. Skid Row and some parts of South LA have higher crime rates, so stick to well-populated, tourist-friendly areas, especially at night. But overall, LA is a safe and welcoming place—it’s just about knowing where to go.

Los Angeles is a city of contrasts. One moment, you’re in the heart of Hollywood; the next, you’re standing on a quiet beach with the waves rolling in. Whether you’re here for a quick visit or a long stay, LA always has something new to offer. And if you take the time to explore beyond the usual tourist spots, you’ll discover why so many people fall in love with this place.
